Bid for Banksy 's Mosquito at The Cumberland Hotels Urban Contemporary Sale

Eight works by legendary graffiti artist Banksy, a canvas by Eine - whose work was given to US president Barack Obama by prime minister David Cameron - a vintage Hermes crocodile ‘Kelly’ handbag and a collection of costume jewellery that once belonged to the Duchess of Windsor, are among the lots on offer at two auctions taking place at The Cumberland Hotel next month.

Taking top billing is a limited edition spray paint and emulsion work, Mosquito, by street art master Banksy (estimate £30,000-£50,000). Other stars of the Urban Contemporary sale include items from French stencil king Blek Le Rat, urban legend D*Face, highly sought after artist Shepherd Fairey and Charming Baker – the FIRST time this artist’s work has come to auction.

Fans of contemporary art and collectors of high-end fashion are expected to pack the Marble Arch property on October 10th, when top London salesroom Dreweatts Bloomsbury hosts the two auctions: Urban Contemporary art* and Luxury: Fine Handbags, Pens and Accessories.

Meanwhile, Luxury: Fine Handbags, Pens and Accessories will feature a wealth of vintage and modern collectibles, including a 1960s Hermes brown crocodile Kelly bag (estimate £8,000-£12,000); five pieces of fabulous costume jewellery designed by Alexis Kirk for the Duchess of Windsor; and a number of contemporary pieces by Cartier, Gucci, Tiffany and Bulgari.

As an added treat for hotel guests and members of the public, The Cumberland will be exhibiting the items up for sale in both auctions from September 29.

Tim Cordon, General Manager, The Cumberland commented: “The Cumberland has a long history of being at the cutting edge of the London art and design scene, so it’s fantastic Dreweatts Bloomsbury are bringing these two incredible auctions here.

“We’re transforming our lobby into a state of the art temporary ‘pop up’ and will have amazing pieces from urban artists, striking canvases and high end couture pieces. The striking ‘gallery’ feel of the hotel makes it the ideal venue to showcase the incredible items going under the hammer.”
